    The visible American flag was a patriotic symbol of war time (meaning during World War One... WWI).
    This letter is typed and has a typed name (as signature) of
    S. J. KENNERLY
    Here are a few cut and pastes from the internet:
    S
    am came from Tennessee.
    Wrote an autobiography titled "Sam Tag" about his childhood experiences during the Civil War. So, am assuming he was born in the 1850's.
    Moved to Gainesville TX. Owned a hardware there store for several years.
    Married Mary Caroline Bird, born 3 Dec 1861, she died 4 Nov 1935
    Had three daughters--one named Mary Douglas and another named Leatha or Leta?  Sam had a brother named William Wilton Kennerly.  Sam referred to him as Wilton.  Wilton had contracted malaria while a prisoner of the Union Army and never fully recovered. Sam Kennerly then took care of Wilton's wife, Mattie and her two daughters.
