    Description

Offered is this antique postcard of a street scene in Neufchateau, France. The back of the card contains a handwritten note from a US soldier, Cpl. Charles Gordon Tate of Battery F, 316th Field Artillery, which I think was part of the 81st Division. The note is not dated but he signs it "Merry Xmas"; I believe this is from Christmas, 1918, as I also had a note by him dated Dec. 17th, 1918 written from France. I was able to find out a little bit about Cpl. Tate. His family was from North Carolina, he was the son of Col. Samuel McDowell Tate, who fought for the Confederacy at Gettysburg, and had a son (Charles Gordon Tate, Jr.) who fought in World War II.
The postcard is approx. 5 1/2" x 3 1/2". It is in very good condition, with no tears or holes. It has yellowed and there is some light soiling. The writing is legible for the most part.
