    Description

    Sand Dollar Fossil
.  Our Sand Dollar fossils, from Madagascar, are of the highest quality and grade available.  Each Sand Dollar will vary in measurements, they
average 2" to 2.75" across when measured at their widest point
    .
This extinct species of Sand Dollar, Mepygurus marmonti, lived during the Late Jurassic Period, 161 to 156 million years ago. An urchin, this animal crawled the seafloor with tube feet and burrowed in the sand to find food. You'll marvel over the intricate, feather-like detail of the star-shaped petals. It is quite astonishing that this fossil retains this level of detail through the mineralization process and survived millions of years of tectonic shift and weatherization.  The polished surface of the fossil has a smooth, glass-like finish while the underside retains the rough, concrete-like rocky texture.
Each specimen features a camel-brown and sand-colored mineralization pattern, some are a deeper shade than others while others may have patches of a creamy white color.  Any cracks or fissures you might find remind us of the fossil's age and are encapsulated and preserved in the specimen.  They are now part of the fossil's character.  And as this is a fossil, you should expect to find cracks, fissure lines, and patches of restoration work performed as needed to preserve and stabilize the specimen.
