WWI letter lot - 11 letters sent from Thomas Henderson Motor Supply Train 423, Co. 512 while stationed at Camp Johnston. Letters show a variety of signs of age, tears, rips, fold, creates, stains etc. - see photos.Letters sent to his wife in Patton, California. Letter are written on YMCA, Knights of Columbus and blank headed paper, not all letters have envelopes. 3 of the letters are Telegram night letters.
Telegram dated Aug 4 1918 . . . Leaving her for Jacksonville Florida . . . I think I will go through Los Angeles . .
Letter dated Aug 21 1918 . . . We go out and eat breakfast in the rain . . I was detailed for orderly service at headquarters . . Detailed to messenger service so I got full benefit of the rain I was wet as a drown rat. . . .our kitchens are just like field kitchens built out of doors no covering . . . .
Letter dated Aug 23 1918 . . . I had to go to a lecture tonight . . .I have been working hard the last two days . . . I am at the YMCA writing this . . .
Letter dated Aug 24 1918 . . . .I think I will get transferred out of the detention camp tomorrow . . . I will go into a Motor truck company but I don’t know what one they have hundreds . . .
Letter dated Aug 29 1918 . . . Change of companies. . Government furnishes sweaters and I would have to get a permit form my commanding officer . . . .can take anything that belongs to us l . . I got my motor truck test today . . .
Telegram dated Aug 29 1918 . . . Am transferred address is Motor truck Co number 512 . . .
Letter dated Sept 3 1918 . . . We are having very bad weather here now, raining all the time . .we are in our tent but that is as bad as outdoors . . . Out for target practice . . I made a score of 58 at 200 yds. . . .
Letter dated sept 5 1918 . . . I sure am working hard now we are training everyday with the trucks , . I think I will be a driver all O.K. Always drive at night . . 27 trucks to each Co. . .tomorrow we get the gas test . . .
Letter dated Sept 7 1918 . . . .I had pay day today . . . .it has rained nearly all day . . We have rain coats now . . . Had my first gas experience . . .we were given gas masks. . . We could put them on in 6 seconds . . . Put in a large room about 50 ft square with masks on they they turned on the gas and kept us in there about 10 minutes . . . .
Letter dated sept 8 1918 . . . We took a small trip with the trucks early this am . . . I think the war will soon be over and sure I hope so . . .
Telegram dated Sept 10 1918 . . . Receive money ok . . Have sent pictures . . .
Letter comes with transcription and copies of documents relating to Thomas and Verna found during research. Records show that Thomas and Verna were lighthouse keepers after the war, notably point Pinos Lighthouse California.
